Pipe Stabbing?

What does "pipe stabbing" mean? I understand it's a British or European term.

It is not a term that I have heard here in South Africa. Perhaps you misheard someone say "stub in"?
 
stub-in/stab-in= same thing

basicaly welding small pipe into large pipe without fittings.
 
in public works in the United States - generally refers to inserting a bell end of a pipe into the spigot as you lay the pipe in the bottom of a trench.
 
Thanks everyone. I thought this referred to something from the oil patch. Looks like it's common to other areas too.
