Pipe sizing and determining the kind of pump to use 1

Hi everyone

We are trying to figure out which kind of pump to use. We are going to pump sewage via a pipe to the treatment plant. I have been asked to find out what kind of pump it will be, for how long will it pump and the flow into the sump. I don't have experience with sewer pumps or pumping of any kind,I would like to know how those of you who do have experience would do it.

First find out the flow in the system that you are pumping. Then look at the peak flow. How far are you pumping? uphill? Will there have to be valleys in the piping? Then call two or three pump manufacturers and have a talk with them.

You'll need the solids content also (size, etc) and the density of the liquid pumped. And the desired flow rate.

I suggest you obtain a copy of, "Pumping Station Design" by Robert Sanks. In my opinion, it is one of the finest engineering texts ever written.

Sewage pumping is more complicated that just selecting a pump. You also have to design the lift station to house the pumps. The design of the lift station will drive the selection of the pump.

Another good textbook is "Collection and Pumping of Wastewater" by Metcalf & Eddy.

The most commonly used type of pump for sewage is the centrifugal pump. The impellers used in these pumps are designed to pass 3" dia. solids. Pumps are generally single end suction, volute type, and fitted with non-clog impellers.

Get a publication prepared by the Water Pollution control Federation - "Design of Wastewater and Stormwater Pumping Stations, Manual of Practice No, FD-4" It was orifinally printed in 1981 but is still a good reference though not as detailed as the Metcalfe and Eddy bokk. It's available at amazon.com.
