Hi all,

I've hit a bump in 2008 where when i use a custom made material with a satin finish, and i select accurate reflections. some options that are in 2007 are no longer available. Specifically the ability to adjust difuse brightness and specularity. My material now is way to dark, and i cant brighten it up. If i adjust difuse and environment, all my other parts look bad. Is this a bug? or am i missing something. thanks in advance.

Tony

there is no option for increasing brightness at all for a satin based material anymore. weird....

havent looked at it with RV so just the renders. I'll look at RV now

when i turn on rv the material with the problem looks like it does with no rv, flat and basic, weird. when i go back to 2007 it renders fine like on my previous assemblies.

Seemed like 2006 let me do the most with custom material properties for tuning things in. I'll be very interested to see if we have more lost functionality with materials in 2008. If so, might need to move away from PhotoWorks--which I hate to do, since the engine behind the interface is so strong.

Here's hoping for some good news.

here is a screen grab of the problem. see the all black parts. they should be like a yellow cadnium finish. everything else in the scene is reflecting properly. Any thoughts? Alos this is the satin based material. if i make it regular conductor or something else it works ok.

Yeah, it's like you need to turn up the illumination settings--and those no longer exist, right? That certainly doesn't look like cadmium plating--probably closer to black anodizing.

exactly. its almost like maybe i had reflections turned off but no the case.

I actually fixed the problem. Apparently there is a problem with the old material being 2007??? I took a 2008 satin based material and just changed some settings like color, to match my old material, and all seems to be well. Not sure why i didnt think of that b4... :)

After seeing your screen shot, it looks similar to a problem that I had with trying to use '07 materials, (as you mentioned) specifically acrylic in my case. I did the same fix as you, and haven't run into the problem again.

havent tried any of the actual legacy materials. But in classic SW fashion i tried to save and it crashed... :( now i've fixed my material again, but at some point b4 saving I changed some environment settings, and my renders look like crap....It never ends. :( Now to try and get back to where i was

You could change the design requirements of the part from cad plate to black anodize. Problem solved! (It's amazing I don't get beaten up more often)

I think it looks pretty good. The material in the butterfly area need to be remapped so it goes around the cylinder and I'd change the environment image to adjust the coloring a bit but all in all it's pretty good. I'd have also used a satin metal shader (with accurate reflections checked) for the steel pieces rather than polished steel.

My thoughts anyway.

i thought i used that for the steel, but i'll re-check. Thanks for the input!

Looking great! The cadmium coating still looks a bit dim, but it may just need a tad more ambient light to "turn up" the scene a bit. I really like how the light plays on the materials.
