Can you advise the following. Is there a section in AWS D1.1 that advises on level of NDT with regards to the following

complete Joint penetration welds. What is level of 100% NDT UT & MT ?

Partial Joint penetration welds. what level of NDT 100% MT?

I do not believe AWS D1.1 addresses the frequency of testing. This issue has been discussed before. I recall posting under a thread discussing this issue...probably back in 2005 or 2006. Please do a search of threads dealing with this matter.

Is the job specfication silent on this subject?

D1.1 does not specifically address the percentage of welds to be receive NDT. Generally this is provided in the Structural Steel Specifications or other project contact information.

Generally fillet welds and partial penetration welds require visual inspection of fit-up prior to welding, and completed welds. NDT can be used if welds are completed and effective weld sizes cannot be determined.

Note that complete penetration welds rely on the lack of discontinuities to develop the full strength of the welded parts. Discontinuities can result is stress risers and/or cracks which significantly reduce the weld strength. Many fabricators NDT 100% of their CJP welds as part of their internal QC program.

VT is the only mandatory NDE required by AWS D1.1 with the exception of CJP welds subject to cyclic stress. Welds that are categorized as B or C must be examined using RT or UT when the cyclic stress is transverse to the axis of the weld. Ref. Clause 2.18 AWS D1.1-2008
