I am new to this forum and would like to pose a question. I have seen more than one structural engineer designing drilled pier foundations for prefabricated pedestrian bridges who are not (at least to my limited understanding) providing for containment for the drilled pier core with the reinforcement hoops as would be typical for a seismic detail for a highway bridge foundation. I have researched "AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design" and can find nothing that would say the containment for pedestrian bridge foundations is not required. For example, I just looked at drilled piers designed by another engineer, and the ties are #4 bars at 10". Does anyone here know of guidance for seismic details for pedestrian bridge foundations? Your help will be much appreciated.
