PDWWorks Ownership Question 1

Hello to all,
As I mentioned a week ago we are new to PDMW, switched over from Smarteam, and are still learning all the can and can't does of PDMW. There is a user here that wants to delete his entire working directory except the files he has ownership of because he may have made changes that he does not want to lose.

Is there is a way to know which files in his local view he has ownership of? I was looking for ownership icons to show up in the local view but did not see any. Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be turned on or is it simply not available?

Files in local: Not sure if you can. Maybe in 2006?

Files in PDMW: There is an icon at top of the PDM window. You can select what to show. Or, I think you can also right-click on file list select what to show.

Yes there is, because you are the PDM administrator.

Have the user create a backup of all the files in the local directory, before doing this.

Within PDM administrator Vault tool check the box “Bind ownership to SolidWorks read-write/read-only access”. Make sure the user has PDM turned on. Now the files he or she does not have ownership of within the PDM will be read-only. Delete all the files that are read only.

If you do not want to use the “Bind ownership to SolidWorks read-write/read-only access” you can turn it back off after the files are deleted. I would leave it on and have Collaboration turn on also. We have did this for a couple of weeks now and no one is over writing peoples work in the PDM anymore.

We already have the bind ownership setting turned on. How would I be able to know which files are flagged as read only in our local drive?

If I browse through his working directory all I see is a listing of all the files in the directory. I would have to RMB select on each file to see if it is read only or not.

Is there something to visually indicate to me which files are read only in either in Windows explorer or in the PDMWorks local view that I am missing?

In Windows Explorer click on View->Choose Details...

Then check on the box for "Attributes". Once you change you view to Details it will list the attributes i.e. H-Hidden, R-Read Only, etc. next to the files.

Thank you very much. That is what I was looking for. Now I know we can safely delete anything with the "R" shown in the attriubte column.

I'll bet you'll miss the ST File Explorer for this kind of stuff...then again maybe not.

Kevin,
To be totally honest, the SmarTeam explorer and the familiar icons are about the only things that I and the rest of the users really miss. We have been on PDMW for about two weeks and so far the users really like it. Personally I like it very much and can't believe how easy it is to maintain, learn and use. I think we made the right decision in breaking away from Smarteam.

Don't get me wrong Smarteam is a good program, but I just think it was overkill for us and the users absolutely despised and stayed away from it as much as possible.
