PDMWorks changing lifecycle status when checking out

Is there an automatic way to have the lifecycle status change when a document is checked out? I need a document to change to the "Revision in Progress" status when a document has been checked out. I've made that status read-only to other departments (other than engineering) so they dont issue a drawing that is currently being revised.

Sean,

I think there may be a misunderstanding of the term lifecycle. Lifecycle is used to determine which phase a part/product is in, such as Engineering Release, Development Release and Production Release.

To mark an item as Change in Process is a function of your Change Control system (ECR/ECO/ECN) and/or Document Control system. I would recommend controlling a notice of pending change in those systems.

Do other deparments access your vault directly? Please describe how this works, and we may be able to provide more incite.

The lifecylce status' we use are:

In Progress - This is for documents which have not yet been approved but are in the vault so other people in the Engineering department can access them. People in other departments see this as "Read-Only" and cannot access them within PDM.

Issued for Manufacturing - This is what a document that has been approved is set to. Anyone with PDMWorks can access it.

Revision in Progress - This for for documents that were once "Issued for Manufacturing" but are being revised currently. The only reason for this lifecycle status is to show other departments that the engineering dep't is working on it so they shouldn't send out a drawing that is being requested by a manufacturing shop.

Right now if a document is being checked out for a revision, ownership is taken automatically but you have to manually change the "Lifecycle status" to "Revision in Progress". I was just looking for a way to automate this.

Does that make sense?

I do not know if the options allow this, but you may want to set it up so that users cannot take ownership of documents that are in the "Issued for Manufacturing" state. This would force them to change the documents to "Revision in Progress" before making changes. This would not automate the process but would make it more secure.
