PDM Works

This is very easy to do. I am assuming you have SolidWorks 2004. By default when you install PDM/Works 2004 just the SolidWorks client and Standalone client get installed. You need to install the PDM/Works server on your local machine in order to get the vault and the service that controls access to the vault. With PDM/Works you can install one vault on each machine. From your machine, you could access as many vaults as you have machines as long as they are installed on each. There is no extra cost involved. From the client, when you log-in you could just pick the vault (machine) that you want to access. Also, you'll need to install the vault admin tool in order to set up the vault. You can use that vault admin tool to administer any vault as long as your user profile that you are logging in with is an administrator on that vault. The vault/service as well as the vault admin tool are all installed from the SolidWorks CD's that you got. Pop the CD's in and I think you just go to 'Other Products' when the option becomes available and then select PDM/Works Server. From there you should be able to choose to add the vault/service and admin tool. I have a local set up on my machine at work for testing and used it for learning as well. I can connect to my local practice vault on my machine or my official company vault running on our network. One of the best points of PDM/Works is that it is easy to set up, transfer, and administer and so it does not require me to be in IT in order to use it and administer it. Is it asking for a password when you attempt to log-in? I will assume this is the case. By default, the out of the box PDM/Works vault has at least one user. That user is pdmwadmin. The first time you log in, use pdmwadmin as the user and pdmwadmin as the password. This will get you into the admin tool where you can create additional users with whatever passwords you like. Make sure to make yourself a vault administrator on your own machine's vault once you have created your user profile. Good luck
Another thing.... You can follow the online tutorial in SolidWorks. There is a lesson on setting up and using PDM/Works. It's new to 2004. It shold help you get up and started quickly and explains the basic settings in the vault admin tool and how they affect use and access to the vault.

You do not need the Advanced Server - that is for adding a web portal to the vault so that others can search, browse, and download from it using Internet Explorer and also for using the API to get extra functionality. If you are logging in to your local machine, under the vault name type "localhost". For the user name type "pdmwadmin" and for the password type "pdmwadmin". This should get you into the vault located on your local machine - your practice vault as you referred to it. Also, you want to make sure the service controlling access to your local vault is running. Under Control Panel .... Administrative Tools .... Services, browse and find PDMWorks Server. Make sure that is running. If its not, start the service and make sure it is set to run upon start up (Automatic). You should not have to start the service since this should have been done upon installation, but you never know - just another piece of information. This should work you now. Make sure to read the online tutorial for PDM/Work as well - most of this information can be found there. Good Luck

I am also interested in running the PDMWorks as a stand alone system. Is there a big difference in SW2005 on the Install?
Also, I looked at the Selection for "Other Products" when loading the CD and did not see the selection you mentioned (i.e solidworks server) I am currently running SW2005 Office Pro. Could use some help here.
