Hey all, I was wondering what is the best way to simulate components on a PCB. Specifically, what materials do you apply to the components to simulate mechanical and thermal vibration? And, do you have a system to eliminate unnecessary components?

"Specifically, what materials do you apply to the components to simulate mechanical and thermal vibration?"

>> the materials the components are constructed with would be a good start.

"And, do you have a system to eliminate unnecessary components?

>> this is something you take up with the mechanical and electrical designers. However, it's unlikely that any experienced designer would put in unnecessary components that a junior engineer would find.

Thanks IRstuff. Let me clarify the second question. What components should I eliminate for the simulation?

This question is impossible for us to answer.

It depends entirely on how accurate you need your simulation to be.

You would have to bear in mind that the components mounted on the PCB will certainly alter the mass and most likely alter the stiffness. The mass is usually easy to get hold of, the increased stiffness is a much longer way. Usually, when the PCB is part of a bigger ElMech assy, I will try to do a simple sine sweep test of the PCB with components, and then tune my FE model to produce the same results. The tuned model is then part of the total assy model.
