Pc startup problems

Hi friends,
Need your help badly!!!!!!!
I am having windows98 on my home PC(Celeron processor). Recently it started giving problems. Suddenly mouse hangs , then keyboard also hangs. After some time I have to restart the PC. The mouse and keyboard again start working. But same problems repeat after 10-15 minutes. My system has become very slow and some time even does not start(i.e. even bios screen does not come). After starting on 3-4 times it sometimes start????
Now I have done following already:
(1) Checked all the cable etc. Floppy drive, hard disk and CDROM all are getting power,Processor fan is also running.
(2) Scandisk has been run, no error reported.
(3) No viruses found.
(4)Finally reinstalled windows-98.
But no improvement.
Any tips or links on troubleshooting

Have you reinstalled Windows after formatting , if not try that and also try windows from a different source.Some times the problem can be due to some hardware like modem or multimedia card(but very rare)

sounds like bad capacitors on the mother board...

Since you BIOS screen does not come up consistantly, it is now a hardware problem. You could have a failing power supply or mother board then again you may be lucky enough to have a CMOS memory error. To eliminate this possibility, you mother board is usually equipped with a CMOS reset jumper. This jumper disconnects the small CMOS battery and shorts out the CMOS power supply input to insure it is erased. Move the jumper to the reset position for about 15 seconds with the system power disconnected then put it back in the run position. Power the system up to setup mode and complete the configuration. You could have actually downloaded a virus that screwed up this memory!

Sounds like intermittent capacitor(s) or bad solder joint. It may be a ROM problem or IC loose in socket. Are all the peripheral boards in tightly or are there any loose wires / connections. Check for RF interference. Is the power plug in tightly ? It may be a bad peripheral, unplug them and try power up. Good luck
