Has anyone heard of such a thing?

I don't have it in front of me, but I do believe the standard itself states how to callout a specific fastener based on the spec.

I don' read much for pleasure. What does FAQ731-376 say?

Sorry to confuse, that's just part of my signature.

The FAQ states general rules-of-thumb for proper eng-tips etiquette. It's not meant to offend, just to draw extra traffic to that FAQ any member who may click.
