Parkade collapse crushes cars in Kingston

Last Updated: Thursday, April 29, 2010 | 1:41 AM ET Comments12Recommend40CBC News

A two-storey parkade collapsed Wednesday night at a hotel in downtown Kingston, Ont., crushing more than a dozen cars but not injuring anyone.

Guests at the Confederation Place Hotel reported hearing a loud boom about 8:30 p.m. followed by fire alarms.

The upper level of the hotel's underground parking garage fell on to the lower level, pancaking between 12 and 20 vehicles, according to the Kingston Fire Department.

Firefighters, police and ambulances were dispatched, as well as utilities personnel to secure gas and electricity lines.

A witness said a ruptured water pipe was leaking into the collapsed garage and the water level was rising.

The hotel will have to remain closed for at least two to three days while officials investigate. Guests were not allowed back in to get their belongings and have been relocated to other hotels in the eastern Ontario city.

The street in front of the hotel, which is kitty-corner to Kingston City Hall, was closed off Wednesday night, but a Lone Star restaurant next door remained open.

Will be interested to see some photos. Most collapses in parking garages seem to be in precast structures which are loosely tied together.

Weren't any photos with the article... and I don't know anyone in the area...
