Parallel or primary/backup operation - which is best?

Hi there guys,

In which type of operation (parallel or primary/backup) will chillers and pumps last longer?
As:
Parallel = more working hours more less stress
primary/backup = less working hours / more stress

How about 2 in parallel plus 1 stand-by, this gives you 3x50% uits that can be arranged for rotating usage between the 3 units.
This gives long life with emergency back-up.

Just throwing a guess out for this answer - I don’t think any equipment manufacturer is going to give you a longer lifetime/warranty expectation just because a unit runs at part load. Some things are independent of load like corrosion or pressure, while yes some items will see less wear when operating slower.

Every piece of equipment has its own unique set of failure points and life cycles, and it really will depend on how it is maintained, how often it is cycled on and off, and it’s total run time.
