Painting over coal tar

Hello everybody,

I got below query and I need some expert advise. Thanks in advance for your help.

"Line pipes (available surplus) is with coal tar epoxy coating which is suitable for underground installation. The same pipes needs to be installed above ground suitable.
Aboveground installation should be suitable for withstanding solar temperature design of 85C. Is it possible to paint without removing coal tar. In such case what is the suitable paint for the same."

Caution... removal of the coal tar epoxy may be hazardous. There may be coatings that go over it, but, I'm not aware of any. Check with one of your local coating suppliers.

Coal tar epoxy is a generic term for a range of coatings. In order to answer your query, it will be necessary to research the specific coal tar epoxy coating that was used.

Also, check the MSDS of the coal tar material from the manufacturer for the product details.

For anybody to help you more information is required.
1. Where geographically is this project located?
2. Is there more than one above ground portion?
3. How long is each above ground portion?
4. Why do you want to paint over a "coal tar epoxy coating" that will not last?
5. Have you considered any other options (say Cladding as is used with Insulation)?

Sometimes its possible to do all the right things and still get bad results
