Question:
In routing is it possible to use Microsoft Visio® to create Piping and Instrumentation (P&ID) schematic drawings of harness routes?
Answer:
SolidWorks routing can create drawings of flattened harness sub-assemblies. This sub-assembly could include many wires and cables. Connectors in the route can be represented automatically as blocks in the drawing and these could be customized so that they represent the icons used in P&IDS. When the route is changed the drawing will update. This is the nearest SolidWorks comes to generating a P&ID diagram.
However, there is no way to automatically create a P&ID from SolidWorks routing.
Microsoft Visio can be used in conjunction with SolidWorks to create schematic diagrams manually. It can be used to draw P&ID’s but there is no link between this and the 3D model. Hence the automatic regeneration of the schematic diagram is not supported.
For piping routes, a .pcf can be generated that can be read into the Alias Isogen product to create piping isometrics.
