That was the Canada of my youth... it Changed. I was actively involved in finding them living accommodatons, food, legal assistance, and work. It was a fun and real interesting time. This was middle to late 1960s. Canada's later actions considered them deserters, since the draft was gone and turned them back or turned them over, depending.
Earlier, I had signed a protest form about Hawker Siddley recruiting on campus. A couple of weeks later, my mom presented me with a copy of the Winnipeg Free Press with the names of those protesting printed... there were thousands of names in about 6 point font... my name was circled. My mom had a high security job with National Defence and someone had pointed this out to her. I didn't quit, I just became far more careful and 'went underground', but kept up 'my fun'. There was an added challenge.
So strange to see the singularity approaching while the entire planet is rapidly turning into a hellscape. -John Coates
