I have been using AutoCAD since the mid-80's and last year was converted over to SolidWorks. I just accepted a position with a company that is AutoCAD and Inventor. Was just wondering if anyone else made this transition and might have some advice, hints, links to tutorials, or anything that might help me get on my feet in the Inventor world....

Kinda glad to be back in the Autodesk ballpark...

Sean has a lot of great tutorials on his site.

The autodesk newsgroup site has major traffic, so put it on your favorites. (sean has a link to it on his site). I have had many questions answered within minutes.

There are a bunch of other great links too....cbliss.com has lots of i-parts to download, and many other sites too numerous to mention.

Happy inventing, and welcome back.

phlyx,

4 1/2 months ago I made the same transition as you. However I'd prefer to be back in the SWX world...but that's just me.

DesignerMike has given you a great start, I would go through Sean's Tutorials, and the one's he lists by Neil Munro...on the ADESK website. Also I would take something that you would use everyday and model it.

Another thing, since you are coming from SWX, if possible make sure your company has IV 8, it is a great deal better than Ver 7.

Other than that...as long as you understand the concepts of 3d, which from what I can see from some of your other posts you do, you will have little trouble with the transition.

I'll reiterate what others have said. Practice. Practice. Practice.

I've know people who went from IV -> SWX and they prefer IV. I think it's all what you are used to.

You should have no problems making the switch.

The company I am going to have Inventor 8 so that is good. I have the 3D visualization down pretty good so that should be a help, too. I like the Autodesk products and hopefully they did a little better job working out the nuisance bugs before they released. SW seems to have tons of little discrepancies that really impact your efficiency. Is Inventor 8 pretty clean? SW2004 reminds me of AutoCAD r13.... hehehehe

It has it's high and low points. You'll find it is missing some key features that SWX has (configurations etc..) but then it has advantages too (adaptivity, cross part associations and general easier sketching in my opinion)

In a perfect world you could take them both, put them in a blender and pop out the perfect package.
