Got a new oscilloscope to play with. 126 page user manual but with no advice as to how to properly connect the test probes.
Would someone take a look at the illustrations below and let me know if I am thinking correctly? It would be appreciated.

Oscilloscope ground should NEVER be connected to anything except a ground. I nearly got got hit by a chunk of an exploding IC when I connected an oscilloscope ground to chassis, which I naively assumed was ground; it was not and it was actually hot.

Agree with IRStuff. A safer approach to taking the measurement you want in your second example would be to take a ground from the vehicle, then use two separate probes on the stator outputs and set the scope to display the difference between the two channels.
