I have seen where a wire is bent through the orifice hole. Besides allowing to make a "smaller orifice" while using a larger drill bit, I was wondering does the wire provide any "cleaning" capibility? Also any link to this design would be appreciated (I have not had any luck finding with google)

I have always though so. I was thinking about the "cleaning" aspect after a recent trouble shooting on a system where a continous feed orifice got something restricting and down stream pressure decayed. I was lucky to back surge the orifice (while online) and releive the problem. The system will be removed from service for inspection in a couple months and contiplating enhanse measures.

There are a good many "tips and tricks" employed by hydraulic systems engineers...
Hammering valves onto seats...
Grinding the edges of valves to make them spill in a slightly different way...
Packing springs...
Dangerous little short-cuts that get the job done...
Stuffing a piece of wire in a choke to avoid re-drilling a hole or to stop crap blocking the orifice in a dirty system.
There are no equations or formulae that can explain how or why they work, they just do. You will struggle to find published data on these "actions" as putting them into print tends to leave the author open to all sorts of lawsuits.
From experience, they work... actually they work very well. Just make sure the can't come out!!!

I don't know what size orifice you have in mind. Although mostly for steam applications, for small orifices, you can use a plug-resistant type, such as those manufactured by CU Services.
