Friends, our shop is a holder of ASME U stamp as well as National Board R stamp. that being said this question pertains to a vessel under new construction using SA-516-70 material at .375 thickness. we have cut our shell plate on our plasma table to the drawing specs, the shell has 1 20" opening as well as 2 @ 2" and 1 @ 6" all to be fitted with sa-106 pipe nozzles and flat face slip on flanges. keep in mind shells are rolled but no nozzles have been installed as of yet. at this point the customer has requested a different location of the openings on the shell. we are going to have to cut a new 6" opening and patch the existing 6" opening. plans are to use drop from the same material for the patch. my questions are would this be considered a non-conformity or a repair and to what extent of NDT would be required. i have the same question in to my AI waiting for a response but want others opinions on this.

Hi,

If customer is asking for change in nozzle location after nozzle opening then I don't think its a non conformity.
It can be considered as repair. RT and UT shall be carried out for patch plate to shell weld.

S engle, this is not an unusual situation, happens a lot.

As yog993 says, full RT the patch, perhaps followed by UT or MT / PT.

It is certainly a repair. Whether it is considered a non-conformance or not sort of depends on the organization, customer, etc. Let your AI be your guide.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Thank you both for your response, from what i have read i agree this is a repair. hopefully i will hear from my AI today.
