I have a project that I need to verify the load capacity of some existing open web steel roof joists. The building is 1979 vintage. The drawing shows the roof joists to be 26H7, with a span of 40 feet. I do have SJI's 50 year digest and other older steel joist manuals, however I am unable to find a capacity in the books I have. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Model it using FEA if you cannot find them in the Joist manual, at least it must give you some clue to the members used, if possible you can check them on the field. Let me see if i can find something in my office, there's a bunch of old crap from the 70's

The reason you can't find it is because it doesn't exist. The smallest joist I have is 26H8. Is it possible it is marked wrong and could be a 24H7 which does exist. Either way, the probably provided a 26H8 in substitution....... Unfortunately the only way to figure this would is to run an analysis on the joist yourself which means getting up in a lift and measuring the geometry of the joist and member sizes of the joist.

Contact SJI using the form, they will look it up for you. Sometimes within an hour.

When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.
