Open Channel Flow

I am working on calculating flow from tides in and out of a salt water pond. There are 2 possible channels for the flow to enter and exit. I know roughly the rise and drop of the pond from high tide to low tide to be about 6 feet and I know that the pond is 147 acres. I have calculated flow rate by being the volume of the water exiting in a tide cycle divided by the 6 hours it takes for the tide to drop. However from fluids I know that there are a lot of losses from funneling all of this water through 2 small channels. Any advice or recommendtions for literature I could look at?

What are you actually trying to determine? If 300 cubic feet of water come into the pound in 3 hours, your average flow rate is 100 ft3/hr. What happens while the water is traveling is not relevant to that calculation.
 
Any basic text on open channel hydraulics will provide all the information you need. I would recommend "Open-Channel Hydraulics" by Ven Te Chow
