Hello everyone. This is my first time posting here.

I'm currently working on my thesis for the mechanical engineering degree. My project is to re-invent the cage welding machine used for making concrete pipe. So far I've encountered 2 problems, which I would be very grateful if you help me with. First, what transmission should I use for the wheel? In the document, the author specified a roller engaging frictionally with the wheel, on the internet, I can see people also use gear or chain drive. This is very confusing to me because from what I've learned, friction wheel has the worst efficiency, while gear and chain only allow limited transmission ratio and the wheel is huge compare to the drive gear/disk from the picture I've gathered. Secondly, I'm clueless on the clamps of the moving wheel, about which the document doesn't specify. Here's document that I've been using.

There's a video with a quite clear view, maybe it can also be of help:
As you can see, at 4:06, what I supposed are some hydraulic cylinders get released and the clamp unit loosen.

Thank you for reading. Sorry for my bad English. I'm looking forward to your assistance.
