I am looking for information on these piles
what type of piles are these?
typical dimensions, etc.

thats it
so it appear that the pile cap is at the top of the pile / bottom of bridge slab. Would you expect to see any sort of cap / structure below the ground level?
 
No. It looks like there are pile caps running transverse to the bridge traffic direction. The deck looks like it frames into the sides of the pile caps. I never saw that before.
