Thanks, Dik. In Charleston, we are over 250 miles from the eye but are currently having tropical storm conditions (heavy rain, 39+ MPH wind). Anyone much closer probably has lost electric power. Since Irma was such a powerful storm to begin with and has lost strength so rapidly (Cat. 4 to Tropical Storm in 24 hours) the wind field has greatly expanded (conservation of angular momentum). Power outages usually become widespread at winds > 50 MPH.

I live in the Greenville-Spartanburg area of South Carolina and it's giving us about 20-30 mph winds (gusts expected up to 45). Could have been far worse though. As it is: we are getting some much needed rain.
