NY or CA?

Hi,

My fiancée and I are moving to the US so she can pursue her masters. We're trying to decide between CA and NY, and we're wondering where the better job market is for me.

I've been working for 3 years at a large company in Israel as an integration engineer, and I've also spent time working for them in Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. I also have experience working in testing tool development.

Which has the better job market for people with my experience, CA or NY? I've been googling jobs, but I'm not sure exactly where to look.

Well, Silicon Valley might be my first choice, but the cost of living was, and still is, quite high there. The LA area is quite large, spanning nearly 100 miles across, and even larger if you include parts of the San Diego area. There are lots of electronics-related companies here; can't vouch for any openings though.

Both places are big and hi-tech enough to absorb anyone with any abilities on this planet. You can't blame those locations if you cant find a job, except that you are not the only one doing it. All depends on you.

You might want to consider cost of living implications. In the US, housing costs vary drastically depending on location. In NYC and S. Cal. you are looking at two of the more expensive locations.

Job opportunities will depend somewhat on your experience and skill set, but I suspect you could find some kind of work in either location. Assuming you can get a work visa.

But there are many cities in the Midwest where you could probably find work, your wife can find a good school and you can live much cheaper so don't overlook places like Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, KC, etc.

Depending on your area of expertise you may want to take a look at Huntsville, AL or Raleigh NC. A wide range of places has been mentioned in this thread. You may also want to consider the climate of each of these places as some can have brutal winters or summers if your not acclimated to it.
