This might as well be a two question post.

Im trying to make a part family with an assembly. I cant seem to figure out how to make it so certain components only show up in some family parts and not others. What attribute would you use?

Also, what if some part families will use two of the same component in two different places? If I have the component in there twice, how does it recognize which component i want on? Im guessing there must be an attribute to add to each component but not sure what it would be.

Actually.... I cant even figure out how to have some components show and others not show, even if they arent the multiples of the same component. lol

If you add components in the assembly , in the add component menu, settings field change the name of the component to name-of-your-choice1 and name-of-your-choice2
For existing assemblies, RM on the component in assembly navigator, Properties, General tab, change name to name-of-your-choice, click Apply name to All occurrences - OK.
Goto part families - on top the pull down menu and choose components, now you can choose the 2 or 3 or more components for use, toggle them with the YES/NO command.

Best regards,

Michaël.

It's simple to describe. more difficult to do in the real. :)
for each instance you add into your part family assembly the part family template of the component.

I.e i have a bolt family. "A.prt"
from this family i use two different components in the assembly.
In the top assy, i add "A.prt" in two locations. ( NOT the member of the "A.prt"!- there is a button in the bottom of the dialog named "add template part" or similar.)

In the spreadsheet, each component will / shall have its own column.
in the respective cell you enter the name of the bolt member .

If an assembly variant should only have one of the two bolts, - leave this cell in the spreadsheet empty.

When I change the name in the General tab, and then go to Family Parts, it doesnt show up in the Component list. The Components are still the match to the Descriptive Part name or Part name in the Navigator window. For instance, in the General Tab, I saw AA12345.f01.0010 and I turned it into AA12345-1, but when I went to Family parts, it still had the original name.

Im sorry, but I am confused. Is the "Add Template Part" in the "Add Component" or the "Family Parts" Dialog? I see a "Importable Part Family Template" in the Part Family dialog, but when I uncheck that it warns me about having to swap collumns in the spreadsheet when transferring from Native to Teamcenter and such.

Oh,...
When you add a component which is a part family,
add the template part, not one of the members, then if you DO NOT drag it in from the reuse library but by "Add Component", you will get a secondary dialog ,. In this dialog there is a special button ... See attached image. :)

I think I see how it works now, but only because I dont think I ever need more than two of any part. If I needed three of a particular component, I dont think it would work for me. Whether I place a single component or a family template, the part family dialog only allows me to add one of each. So I am able to add a component and a template of that component to be able to select two different items for the columns. Then in the spreadsheet under the template I just use the number of the component it would make to get my second one. But if I needed a third, I cant see how it would work without allowing me to use more than one of the same component.

If you have a picture of the family part dialog and the spread sheet one something using more than 2 of one component, I would love to see it. Sometimes pictures help me a lot.

I do thank you both for the help. [bigsmile]
