NX7.5 TO NX8.5, MIGRATION OF MATERIAL ATTRIBUTES

Hi,

I’m having an issue with the material part attribute when switching from NX7.5 to NX8.5. When opening the part in NX7.5 I can modify the material attribute, while in NX8.5 it seem to be locked....
Have you seen this issue before? Could you advise how to solve it ?

Yes, that works,it updates the attribute, thanks!I'm wondering why it was editable manually in 7.5 and is not in Nx8.5...?!
 
Are you starting with a Part Template? That might be the first place to look.

It is an improvement in recent versions of NX (starting with 8, I think); the material attribute is tied to what is actually used in the file. This way you cannot apply one material to the solid and specify a different material in the attribute list.

The reason for the change is more strategic than it may at first appear.

When you assign a Material to a body using the Tools 'Assign Material' function, not only are you assigning a 'Material' attribute you're also 'tagging' that body with a data record linked to the material database. Now there is NO direct relationship between what is seen as the 'Material' attribute and the internal data record, which means that if you edit the 'Material' attribute it will have NO effect whatsoever on the internal data record. Now the critical issue here is that if you perform any sort of mass properties calculations or FEA analysis, it's the information in that internal data record which is used and NOT the value of the 'Material' attribute.

What was happening prior to NX 8.5 was that people were editing the 'Material' attribute and then when the density didn't change or the CAE results came-out incorrect, people started to open PR's because they expected this to have changed everything. Anyway, it was decided that since the 'Material' attribute was just reporting the name of the material that was set using the 'Assign Material' function, that it should be created as a 'locked' attribute so as to force users to follow the proper procedure, that is, changing the material by using the 'Assign Material' function instead.
