NX7.5: Thicken Failure Analysis

Good morning, everyone.
I have a sheet body I tried to thicken this morning, but the thicken operation failed. I clicked the "Show failure data" button in the thicken menu, but I am unsure how to interpret the results. The information window provides the following info:

Error data: ifail = 1075 , state = 0

Thickening failure

Minimum radius value = 16.85000000000
was found at 1 point located at coneheads with solid font
Minimum radius value = 0.32500000000
was found at 1 point located at coneheads with dotted font


I have attached a screen-shot for reference. What I'm wondering is if anyone can tell me how to interpret thicken failure results in general.

Hi John,
I needed to thicken the part to 0.100". It will thicken up to some fraction of that (I think it was .085 or .095"), but it won't thicken to what I need. I found that by removing the offending blends from the sheet body, I could thicken the part, then apply the blends to the solid body that resulted.

Sometimes, that's the approach one has to take. Blends are tricky things.

The reason it doesn't want to thicken, is that the faces have a curvature (radius) smaller than the thickness entered.
Consider a "U"- shape. trying to thicken the "U" outwards will accept any value but inwards only some value before the offset face intersects itself.
Applying thicken on a "S" shape will have problems in both directions at a certain value, it has curvature in both directions.
On your model, the highlighted face has curvature in both directions. Probably due to the surrounding faces.
( Reading your post , the value presented should accept an offset of 0.1, the min radius noted is 0.325. Strange.)

I'd suggest running "examine geometry" on the original sheet body to make sure it doesn't have any problems with the underlying geometry.
