NX6: settings won't save after exit

When I exit the file (any file) and come back later, all my toolbars and preferences have reverted to the "out of the box" settings. I changed the customer defaults to reflect my preferences, but the files still open with the default settings. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like you don't have write access to your home directory where your defaults are saved. You may be using a roaming profile or some other network based gremlin is in operation. You'll have to re set up all your toolbars but this time save your settings to a role file so that you can get them back. My guess is that you'll need to have a word with your system administrator to change some file permissions but in the meantime you can always re-load your saved role whenever you need to.

Isn't there a setting under Preferences to Save Layout at Exit? You also might check that.

Thank you both for your help. Hudson's remark mentioning the role pointed me in the right direction: there is a pick in Customer Defaults: NX Window Display after Loading Role (Windows Only), with 2 options - "As Saved in Role" and "Current".
I changed to the second option and now it saves my toolbar settings to the last configuration when I exited the application. I am a contractor at a microsized firm, just here for a brief period, and there is no support. It's great to have a knowledge base that I can access discretely anywhere I work. Thanks again.

If the system is nailed down, an alternative is to set the local variable UGII_USER_PROFILE_DIR to an area you can write to. Then the mtx file that stores your screen settings are written to an area you can control. If you have a network directory you can write to, you can use this to give you a roving profile too!

Hey Scotty nice to see a Samba user; I'm guessing, the term roving profile is Samba for Windows roaming profile. They each have different implications on why write access doesn't set up properly. The idea of setting up mapped drives for each user, each to a different place (usually directories on a server) all to the same letter is often a convenience that suits some of these needs quite well. It doesn't necessarily commit you to maintaining roaming profiles across disparate server types when it all gets to hard either.

The system isn't exactly "nailed down" - the system admin is an auto cad user who knows nothing about UG. He would probably make any changes that I suggest. Some of the variables I changed in Customer Defaults still don't work, such as background and object colors. Minor stuff, but if there is a way to make that work, I would appreciate it.
Thanks again.

You have to understand that some Customer Default settings are Part specific and some Session specific. The Part specific ones only have effect on NEW part files at the time that they are created. Once created and saved, changing the Customer Default for a Part specific item will have NO effect on existing part files. However, Session specific items will effect all parts whether new or existing.

If you discover that what you're wishing to change is a Part specific item, you will need to open the part file and edit/modify the specific issue directly in the part file.

To learn which items are Part and which are Session specific, go to Customer Defaults and select the 'Find Default' option (the binocular icon) and type in the word 'all' and when the list is generated, scroll to the far right and select the heading titled 'Scope' and you will now have all the items sorted according 'Part' versus 'Session'. If you wish to examine them more closely or to get a record of what's is or is not available, export the defaults to the spreadsheet using the 'Manage Current Settings' option (the eyeball icon) where one of the options allows you to export the contents of the default system to Excel, where you can 'slice & dice' the data however you wish.

Also, changes to Customer Defaults DO NOT take effect until you Exit and restart NX.
