How do you set the material to automatically update in the title block if you change the material using Tools->Assign Material?

Answer: Input the following string <WRef1*0@Material> into the cell where you would like the material to display.

Is it really this straightforward? I am relatively new to NX (used only 8.0 and 9.0 so far) and so I assume there is some risk or flaw I have not experienced yet.

I hope this helps whoever is looking for a simple solution.

As long as you have a file attribute for "Material" it should work.

I'm also confused about the material. I also used the string <WRef1*0@Material> in both title block and parts list. As I used the command "Assign Material" to a part, it did work in the Parts List, but not work in the title block. I tried to use Attribute Tool > Synchronize Attribute to make the material to be Synchronized from master model to sheet, but none values can be Synchronized unless I unselect two attributes about material(Like "MaterialMissingAssignments" "MaterialMultipleAssigned"). The material in the title block must be typed in manually. I'm using NX 8.5.

Have a look at Link it's a video that covers attributes for drawings.
