Is NSF certification required by the USEPA for pipes used to convey drinking water? Or is it up to the states to determine what certifications are necessary?
that explains, “Standards for the chemicals used for treating drinking water and for the system components are not a mandatory part of the federal laws and regulations that guide our national drinking water program. Instead, standards were developed under a voluntary program with input from regulators, product manufacturers and water utilities”.
However, this site also states (note also web copy apparently dated more than 10 years ago), “…41 states require compliance with ANSI/NSF Standards 60 and 61 through legislation, regulation or policy. Twenty-nine states have enacted legislation or regulations, and 12 require compliance by policy. Three other states have proposed legislation to establish compliance requirements.”
I suspect you could obtain more information/updates on such status with contacts through this site etc.
