All, I am replacing a nozzle on the bottom of a vessel that is used for draining out a water seal. The working fluid is CO, however when the vessel needs to be worked it, it is filled with water to seal out the CO and then the water is drained through the nozzle i am replacing. (the vessel is refractory lined CS). The nozzle is currently simply 12" pipe weleded to the shell so I have a cold wall welded to a hot wall and need to fix this. The way to do this is to use a 12x8" reducer welded to 8 "pipe and then fill up the gap with refractory to ensure that a cold wall is not welded to a hot wall. My concern is that the difference between 8" and 12" pipe for the water drain could cause a siphoning or other problem I am not aware of.
Any ideas?
