I am using STAAD.Pro Ver 2002. The new non-linear cable feature assumes the cables and preloaded trusses can have large displacement and moderate/large strain. My question is, if the cables are assumed to carry only tension loads tangential to the cable at every point, can I break the cable up into smaller parts to form a catenary?

Yes you can. You can break up the cable into smaller parts to form a catenary and apply selfweight, thermal or tangential loads to each part.
