Nominal Voltage Question 44kV or 46kV

Hello,

We are having a discussion on nominal voltage. Our system was built in the early 1900's and a lot of the documentation refers to it as a 44kV system but when it is discussed it is referred to as a 46kV system.

The transformers are tapped predominately at 43.8kV and the system operate voltage is around 45.1kV.

So is this system properly referred to as a 44kV or 46kV system?

46 kV. Nominal system voltage would be 46 kV and it will also be the minimum design voltage rating for the equipment. Operating voltage can be anything below 46 kV.


Same as the common 15 kV class equipment, the operating voltage varies from 12.47, 13.2, 13.8 or 14.4 kV, depending on the local systems.

When it was built it was probably a 44kV system and has been upgraded.
As an instance, 440V was once a standard voltage but over the years it was upgraded to a 460V standard and then to the 480V standard in use today.
You may still hear 480V systems referred to as 440V.
You may hear 240 Volt systems referred to as 220 Volts.
About 50 years ago, 220 Volts was the standard voltage.
Systems are upgraded and times change.

44 kV is a standard nominal voltage in the IEC marketplaces with rated maximum system voltage of 52 kV.

Your operating voltage fit well into this category.

From your post,the transformer primary voltage said to be 43.8 kV.Primary is always connected to the nominal system voltage.Therefore,in my opinion,your nominal system voltage should be 44 kV.What is the Max voltage (ANSI)or Rated Voltage (IEC)in the name plate of the circuit breakers in your installation?From that data also you can determine the nominal system voltage.
