I am looking for no contact swith or sensor to drive 6V DC motor. My original plan is to use magnet and reed switch. When magnet moves to very close to reed switch, it will turn reed switch on, and then drive 6V DC motor. However, reed switch I used only can sense the magnet about less 1". Is there more sensitive sensor or switch I can use? Or, how can I build a circuit to sense the magnet far away (above 6") to control 6V DC motor? I only know a little about circuits. I would appreciate any suggestions and advices. Thank you very much

I would not recommend trying to sense a magnetic field from 6" away. Instead look at using one of the following sensing technologies: Optoelectronic, Photoelectronic, Laser or Ultrasonic.
David Baird
dbaird@gemcity.com

EET degree.
Sometimes, it is possible to build a magnetic circuit from the soft iron. It could be possible, if the hardware configuration permits, to extend the read switch sensing for your 6" by a soft iron prism or rod. This may be the simplest solution. Another solution would rely on a very sensitive magnetic sensor which could sense traces of magnetism and amplify it or react to it such a way that it would activate a switch, perhaps a solid state switch or relay.
