Hello All,

Can someone please advise if the requirement to increase the area of operation by 30% is applicable to Single Interlock Pre Action Systems?

I can see from the Code that it is a clear requirement for Dry Pipe and Double Interlock.

My application is a non storage environment and the deterction devices are rate of rise heat detectors and flame detectors.

Thanks

Dave

No increase required for a single interlocked system.

Single Interlock Preaction systems admit water into system piping upon operation of detection devices (NFPA 13-2013 7.3.2.1(1)). The heat and flame detectors will be more sensitive than the sprinklers, and will admit water into the piping before the sprinklers activate (7.9.2.8.1.1). The 30% design area increase for dry and DIPA systems is to account for the delay between sprinkler activation and water application onto the fire.

Gentlemen,

Thank you very much for the clarifications.

Yes. But, I do not believe you can use the QR reduction in a SIPA. I could be wrong, but that is my recollection.
