I need to specify a magnet to operate a linear hall effect device for small displacement measurements. The Hall effect sensor works within a range specified in gauss. The SmCo magnets are specified in Newtons. Does anyone know if it is possible to make a conversion and how?

A Gauss is the CGS unit of magnetic flux density.
G=0.0001 N per Amp x meter
A field of one Gauss exerts, on a current carrying conductor the force of one ten thousandth of a Newton per ampere of current per meter of conductor.
In practical terms this is the force that will make two transmission lines to fly apart when lightning strikes one of them.
If you go to the Bunting web site there is a table on Samarium Cobalt magnets that will show you the magnetic flux density.
