Hope I’m posting this in the right area...

I’m in IT by trade but I’ve been tasked with automating BOM after the quantity takeoff group hands over there numbers. After ALOT of research I am thinking that Excel VBA might be the best solution for doing this. Just thought I’d ask and get some feedback. This group is a specialty fence contractor and there are a lot of variables with BOM for fence because numerous configurations for each type of fence. Thought I would reach out here as I have sifted through many tools and not sure which way I should go. Anyone else in this trade have any feedback.

Thanks

I think that'll give you job security, but that's about it. There are BOM routines for most CAD programs already and re-inventing the wheel is not particularly productive, overall.

Hi,

I've written some BOM routines in Excel VBA. They are recursive, that is the routine calls itself until the bottom of the BOM is reached (parent has no child).

So you would also need to access the DB. I used ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) with a Parameter query, where the individual components (children) you glean from the BOM are fed back as parts (parents).

Its been a while since I did this, as I've been retired about five years. This is Eng-TIPS.
