new steel beam to existing circular conrete colum 1

I need a 4ft Steel I beam cantilever to connect to an existing 20" dia circular concrete column. This seems simple by just drilling holes then adding threaded rod and end plate.

i'm concerned about hitting column rebar though and the end plate will be semi circular.

any suggestion?

Do your forensic analysis with a rebar locator and design the connector accordingly.

i dont think it's possible. we are talking about a lot of cantilever beams connected to different columns on varying levels.

what is the best way to connect to existing given the situation?

Can you fabricate steel collars to go completely around the columns, with just enough anchors to support the beam vertically?

There is no other option but use post installed anchors in this case. Detail your connection such that the contractor is able relocate the end plate by a few inches to miss rebar. It is real easy to locate rebar in columns using a propometer. Check the link below. Had to use this one on a project where we had to drill cores from a good number of columns in a building. hokie, can you give more info on that collar (vendor, etc)? does it use friction only to support vertical load?

No vendor...you would have to design it yourself, strong enough to take the bending. As I said before, use drilled in anchors, mechanical or chemical, for the vertical load component.

In Australia some of the site guys refer to what they call a "masonry drill bit" which is soft and the operator will feel the steel when they are drilling. I normally allow this so if they do hit steel the hole can be re-adjusted to suit. Once the anchors are in it would be a case of fabricating the plate to suit or drilling the bolt holes on site which would possibly compromise the finish on the plate.
