I am a new fire protection designer looking for a good all around reference book. I am currently thinking about the Fire Protection Engineering Handbook from NFPA or the Design/Layout of Fire Sprinkler Systems, Second Edition from Mark Bromann. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Are you doing fire sprinklers only? If so, the main book will be NFPA 13. If you are new to the field and want to gain a rapid in-depth knowledge of fire sprinkler layout, the American Fire Sprinkler Association offers a 2 week design class. You can view their web site at When I have sent individuals who have been working in sprinklers for about 3-6 months down there to the class, they have returned with an equivalent knowledge base of a person that has been in the field for 2-3 years. It is a great benefit to the new designer.

The bible is the NFPA automatic sprinkler systems handbook. A little pricy but well worth it.
