Good afternoon,

I have recieved a drawing with a block reference which has many nested parts. All I want to be able to do is copy a small area of this drawing and use it in my own.
The problem is with nested items in the block that appear in areas of the drawing I dont want to copy.

Having never needed to use REFEDIT/XREF etc I just want to be able to explode the block and delete the areas I don't want.

What command/approach should i take?

Chris,

If all you want is part of the block to use in your own drawing, open the drawing you received and place the block in some area. Do what you said, explode, erase what you don't want then cut and paste as block in your own drawing.

Haggis.

Chris,

haggis has pretty much nailed the solution except for 1 question that I would have for you. Is this drawing going to be X-REFFED into your drawing and be updated at some future point in time? If so, you might want to consider the idea of attaching this as an X-REF so that the update will be automatic when you receive the newer version. You may also be able to use COPYCLIP to trim out the area/parts that you want and NOT show all the stuff that you don't.

Hope this helps,
Paul

Thanks for you reply Haggis,
but the problem is I can't explode it. I assume this is due to it having many nested blocks within the block?
ie when I double click on the block, it open the REFEDIT dialogue box and displays a "structure tree" of the nested blocks.

Thanks all. Sorted!
I have found that if i repeat the explode command it eventually erodes the nested blocks down into single entities.

You are lucky - if the xref included blocks scaled to different x and y scales, you would have needed more software help.
