Needle Beam and New Opening in Ex. Block Wall

Hi all,

Looking into shoring up some 10" wide block wall (running bond) for a new opening. We are installing the new W8x31 lintel beam. It's an 84" wide opening in a wall that supports OWSJs (4' o.c.) on one side only (i.e. other side has joists running parallel). See drawing below (not to scale!). We've got a needle beam positioned at the center of the new opening. My question is, if I draw lines diagonally upward at a 45 degree angle from either edge of the needle beam, and the OWSJs land within that region, is it safe to say that the concentrated loads from the OWSJ will be taken up by the needle beam and surrounding block wall through arching action? I have (x2) toe to toe angles temporarily inserted into the block wall from either side as a safety measure to make sure the old blocks not within the arching area can't fall under self weight. The joists above are supporting a roof load only. No construction or access to the roof. No snow load given the time of year. Needle beam supported by No. 2 jack posts on either side of the wall.

Personally, I would be inclined just shore the bar joists.

I usually just cut a slot for a column at the middle of the wall, install the column, cut out the rest of the opening, sandwich the column with channels and then cut the column off.
