I need to write a few stand alone engineering related programs and was wondering how to get started. Thanks.

Years ago I was given a copy of VB3.
I created my first programmes by reading the help file.
Later I bought a book.
Then I Googled "VB tutorials" and "VB code".
Then I found VB specific discussion forums where I could ask for help.

kxa,

You can start by downloading VB.net express (free download) from Microsoft. There was a free tutorial available a few months back. That is were I would start.

kxa,
Sign up for a collage class on VB. Then in the mean time you can start by what PeterCharles and Regg said, which is a good idea. There are a lot of SolidWorks VB programs out there. It is nice to learn structured programming language from someone who teaches it. Who knows, maybe you will be writing a lot of these.

Do note that VB.NET express and VB2005 are .NET languages and bear little similarity with VB3 through VB6.

VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) which is used as an extender/macro language in many full-blown apps is much closer to VB6, and the .NET languages may not help with VBA

In summary choose whether you want to produce full-blown .NET enabled applications (use VB.NET / 2005) or whether you want to extend functionality of existing apps (use VBA/VB6)

Good Luck
