What is the best motor type to use for the following application?:
A portable tool (variable torque) operating at 24 VDC needing 1/2 hp full load at 10,000 rpm. Continuous operation, overall motor life at least 200 hours, speed control all required.

Go to the motor manufacturers they will be able to steer you quickly.

fti, I have gone through my list of brushed dc motor suppliers but have drawn a blank - that combination of speed and power doesn't seem to be available, at least off the shelf. Which is a pity as brushed dc would be the cheapest solution and sits quite happily with the relatively short lifetime requirement.

So I agree with blacksea, I think you are looking at a brushless dc motor - not so cheap.

- unless you consider brushed dc with a gearbox.

I would be considering using a tool driven by compressed air and using a fixed speed motor to drive a suitable compressor.
