Please provide a definition for the specification 42CrMo4 HH TQ+T. What does HH and TQ+T specifically means.

Q + T means Quench and Temper. This steel is strengthened by austenitizing (heating to ~ 1000 [°]C), then quenching (~ 25 [°]C), then tempering (~ 500 [°]C).

Regards,

Cory

zner46,

You need to obtain the standard EN 10083-1 Quenched and tempered steels - Technical delivery conditions for special steels. This standard defines the requirements for grade 42CrMo4 +HH +QT. The +HH designation means that the grade has restricted hardenability (see Table 7), and as CoryPad already mentioned, the +QT means quenched and tempered. Table 12 of this standard provides some guidance values for heat treating parameters, which for this grade are 820-860 C for the austenitizing temperature, and 540-680 C for the tempering temperature. Oil or water can be used for quenching depending on the exact hardness, depth of hardening, etc. DIN EN 10083-1 or BS EN 10083-1 are available from Global Engineering Documents using the following link:

These should clear up that pesky HH:
