Gentlemen:

This is the first time I have the need to use Figure CS-3-Metric in my calculations for VIII-1, and need to make sure on the following:

For external pressure calculations in ASME-II-D Figure CS-3-Metric states that this figure is for Carbon Steel and Low Alloy Steels with SPECIFIED MINIMUM YIELD STRENGTH (SMYS) of 260 MPa and higher for temperatures 150°C and less.

I have the understanding that such SMYS is that yield strength listed for example in Table 1A because title of the column reads “Min. Yield Strength, MPa”, these yield strengths are the same as those listed in Table Y-1 on column with same title.

Or…, is it the yield strength at design temperature as listed on Table Y-1 for different temperatures?

Which one is correct?

Please send your comments.

At design temperature.....General note (c) - When Table Y-1 yield strength values at design temperature are below 38ksi use Fig. CS-2.
