Hi!!

I m just new in this forum. I m a foreign civil engineer. Working in my back home as a govt. civil engineer for 25 yrs. Now I came to usa (CA) as a permanent residence. Actually my questions are:
1.i don’t know what I have to do here or is there any possibility to get any civil engineering job?
2.Do I need to pass EIT exam?

Pls is there anybody who can show me right way ... to go.

4819,

I don't live in California, so my perspective may not be entirely correct.

There are lots of civil engineering jobs on Careerbuilder.com. I suspect that without an EIT certification, you may have to settle for a technician position.

In order to sit for many state exams (including EIT, also known as "Fundamentals of Engineering"), you will need to apply to the state board of licensure. Most state exams are administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES). Their website is and has links to all state examination bodies. You will likely need to obtain documentary proof of your previous engineering experience and prove that your experience and/or education are equivalent to accredited engineering programs in the US.

You are embarking on (probably) a long and tedious process to become recognized as a professional engineer in this country. Try and see if there are any other engineers from your previous country who are practicing in the US. They will be able to offer you better guidance on it than I can.

Good Luck!

To prove substantial equivalence, you need to have your degree accredited by ABET's Engineering Credentials Evaluation International. ( It costs $450, they take longer than the published six weeks, and despite your best efforts, they have no idea what they're doing and will misevaluate the credit hours associated with your courses.

I've never spent so much money and received such poor service in my life before. My senior classes - in a degree where the first two years were not wasted on "humanities" and other useless "core" classes - were too advanced for them to find anything equivalent in an undergraduate course in this country, so they evaluated senior engineering classes of 4.5 credit hours as 1 credit hour each.

Fortunately, some states recognise the federal Washington Accord - - but don't bother emailing anyone there for help because they don't reply.

Kentucky is one of the states that recognizes the federal accord.

You don't need an EIT to get a job in engineering. You only need one if you're going to get a PE.

Consult the NCEES website for all information regarding the FE and P&PE exams.
Here's a link to their sanctioned study materials:
Give yourself at least three months to study for the FE, and I suggest you make strides to improve your English so that you can better understand the questions, particularly the Ethics section.

I strongly recommend that you contact your state Board of Engineers before spending money on study materials, however. You need to be approved by a state before you can take the FE exam, and if they have any issues with your degree, they may not let you sit it until you've taken some courses in the US.

hi!!

1st thx to every one and this forum for helping me.
I again need some further information about Credentials Evaluation.
I already contact to ABET's about equivalency of my degree and it cost $450.
I also heard about another credential service and that is and they do it for only $85.
Is there any one who already did their degree equivalency from this International Education research foundation, Credentials Evaluation service?
OR which one is reliable ?

qayum .

You need to contact the state in which you wish to become licensed. As far as I'm aware, only ABET is recognized for engineering accreditation, but of course it is on a state-by-state basis.
