Need a stop

The easiest way for my application to stop a hydraulic cylinder at the right distance ( in one direction) is to adjust the cylinder so it bottoms out. But something in the back of my mind says I should not do this. Any thoughts on this?

It is often done. If the movement is relatively slow you would not need to consider a cylinder with an end cushion. Just move it until it bottoms.

You didn't say if it needed to be adjusted in retract or extension. For extension the most common way is to put a sleeve inside the cylinder over the rod. For retraction the sleeve is usually put over the rod on the outside. Ag applications do this quite frequently as a method of depth control, so the stops are available as spling-loaded sections that snap over the rod (though the rods are usually only 1-2" OD.
