Hi,

I have some piping thast is being desinged and built to ASME B31.3.
The designer has got me doing penetrant dye inspection of all the attachment welds, so support brackets, welded pads etc.
This seems excessive to me,
Can anyone point me at the justification for this as I can't find the requirement in my B31.3 book.
Thanks

Unless
- it's a requirement of the engineering specification (i.e. the client has required this additionally to B31.3 per their applicable client standards), or
- the service is designated as Elevated Temperature Fluid Service and 341.4.4(b)(2) is applicable.
then no, it is not a specific requirement of B31.3.

I suggest you review the applicable Code sections in Chapter VI (paragraphs 340 up to 344).

The required NDE of the fabrication may be based on the specific design conditions per Code, or for the material used in the certain process applications. You may want to clarify with the Process Engineer or Material Engineer if not so sure for the requirement.
